Volleyball snaps skid with five-set win at Rhodes

Box Score

MEMPHIS, Tenn.—Emma Williams, Jackie Schner and Ellie Alfonso posted double-digit kills, and Oglethorpe's volleyball team ended its losing streak with a come-from-behind victory over Rhodes Sunday in a Southern Athletic Association match. Rhodes won the first two sets, but the Stormy Petrels stormed back in the 19-25, 21-25, 25-22, 25-12, 15-9 win.

The match marked the seventh time Oglethorpe went to a fifth set this season and snapped a four-match streak of fifth-set losses. Most recently, the Petrels had lost three of their last five matches in the fifth set. Oglethorpe also avenged a four-set loss to the Lynx earlier this season when Rhodes bounced back with wins of the second, third and fourth set.

Williams and Schner both posted 14 kills in Sunday's win while Alfonso followed close behind with 13. Ta'Korya Green came next with seven kills.

Big runs in the last three sets

Oglethorpe won the last four points of the third set to start a momentum swing that helped the Petrels run away with the fourth set. That set started with a 5-0 run for a total of nine straight points Oglethorpe won spanning the third and fourth.

The Petrels trailed set five 3-2 but went on another 4-0 run to surge into the lead. Rhodes was able to get it back to a tie at 8-8 before Oglethorpe won seven of the last eight points to finish the match.

Up next

Oglethorpe hosts three matches next week to close the regular season. The stretch will start with Covenant Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Dorough Field House.
