Volleyball sweeps Sewanee for third straight win

Box Score

ATLANTA—Another team effort led Oglethorpe's volleyball team past visiting Sewanee Saturday afternoon in Dorough Field House. Gabbi Phillips recorded 25 assists and 21 digs as the Stormy Petrels won 25-20, 25-22, 25-15.

The win kept Oglethorpe on the winning track with its third straight win and fifth sweep of the season. Six Petrels earned at least two kills, with Ellie Alfonso's nine leading the way.

Oglethorpe used a 6-0 run midway through the opening set to create some separation from what was a 10-9 game. Emma Williams had two kills on that stretch before teaming with Kinsey Wilson for a block on the final point of the opening frame.

The block helped create a spark for set number two as the Petrels came out firing with the first seven points on Phillips' serve. This stretch also featured two kills from Williams, although the Tigers would claw their way back to take the lead 14-13. It was not until the Petrels' ensuing 3-0 run that they would take the lead for good.

Oglethorpe then went on another 3-0 run to go ahead 21-17 and locked up the second set 25-22.

Finally, Legacy Guider served five straight points near the start of the final set as Oglethorpe went ahead 6-2. The run ended with a Guider ace, and the Petrels ran away on the last stretch with an 11-5 run. The match ended with back-to-back kills from Wilson and Alfonso.

The Petrels spread their attack in the win, with Alfonso and Jackie Schner earning nine kills and eight kills, respectively, to lead Oglethorpe. Wilson earned seven, Williams six and Ta'Korya Green five. Four Petrels tallied double figures in digs as Phillips had 21, Sophia Cendoya 13, Schner 11 and Alfonso 10. Oglethorpe also put up eight team blocks, four apiece coming from Williams and Green.

Next up, Oglethorpe hosts Centre Sunday at 12 p.m. back here at Dorough Field House in the regular season finale. The Southern Athletic Association tournament is set for Nov. 5-7.
