Volleyball sends seniors off with win

Box Score

ATLANTA—Oglethorpe volleyball's winning streak increased to four Sunday when the Stormy Petrels celebrated senior day with a four-set win over Centre. Emilee Etter, Emma Williams and Ta'Korya Green were honored prior to the 25-13, 21-25, 25-17, 25-13 win.

The win wrapped up the regular season for the Petrels and avenged a three-set loss they suffered at Centre earlier this season.

"I am so proud of our fight and commitment to grow each match," said Head Coach Anna Braun after the victory. "Despite a challenging start to conference play, our team has stayed committed to pursuing excellence and finishing the season as strong as possible. We are going to take this momentum and commit to pushing ourselves in practice to prepare for a big splash in the conference tournament."

Ellie Alfonso led the team with 11 kills with 20 digs, three assisted blocks and two service aces. Williams and Jackie Schner followed with 10 kills, Schner's coming alongside 19 digs. Gabbi Phillips also had a great match with eight kills, 33 assists, 11 digs and three block assists.

The Petrels put up 26 assisted blocks as a team, several coming late in the match as they pulled away. In fact, Oglethorpe led 21-10 in the final set before denying Centre on three straight attack attempts to put a punctuation mark on the match and last stretch of the regular season. Kinsey Wilson was a part of all three while Williams assisted two and Alfonso the other.

The three straight blocks were part of a 6-0 run Oglethorpe used to run away with the final set and part of an even larger 11-1 run midway through that set.

Oglethorpe posted a similar effort in set three, winning five straight points at the end of a 12-3 run that made it 20-11.

Up next, Oglethorpe heads to the Southern Athletic Association tournament, set for Nov. 5-7. More information on the tournament will be released by the SAA office once all teams have completed the regular season.
