Second straight win for women's basketball

Box Score

DANVILLE, Ky.--Oglethorpe's women's basketball team earned their second win of the season this Saturday afternoon against the Franklin College Grizzlies with a final score of 69-56. The Petrels were led by Sydni Donovan who scored 21 points this game, and Taylor Smith who scored 11.

This game was a part of the Centre College Tournament, the second game this week in Kentucky for the Petrels.

"We turned a good weekend into a great weekend with our performance today," Head Coach Alex Richey said. "Our defense carried us throughout the game, and we did a really good job on the glass against a very big and physical opponent. I'm super proud of the team for really focusing on doing the little things like boxing out and diving on the floor for loose balls that may not show up in the box score, but are the true measurement of the type of team we want to be and the type of season we want to have."

Their second game in a row out in Kentucky, the Stormy Petrels started this game out strong as well. Donovan, Smith and Amy Vazquez racked up eight points for the team by the time the clock read 6:57, as the Grizzlies were unable to score until almost five minutes into the game. The first quarter was a strong one for the Petrels, who ended the first 10 minutes at a score of 17-4.

Donovan made a jump shot barely 30 seconds into the second quarter, and began yet another dominating quarter for Oglethorpe. The Stormy Petrels continued to stay leaps ahead of the Grizzlies, ending the first half with more than double Franklin's score, at 38-15.

The second half of the game played out similarly, with Oglethorpe staying on top with ease. The fourth quarter started at a score of 53-31, and the gap remained the same throughout the remaining 10 minutes. Vazquez scored the final point of the game, with a successful free-throw that secured the final score of 69-56.

This win is the second overall, and second in a row for the women's basketball team, putting them at 2-4 for the season so far.

Oglethorpe comes back home for their next game, their first home game, on Wednesday, Nov. 24, at 1 p.m. against the Eagles of Asbury University.
