Box Score ROME, Ga.—After winning the last four matches to close the regular season, the Oglethorpe volleyball team's late-season momentum came to an end Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Southern Athletic Association tournament with a four-set loss to Hendrix, 23-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-16.
Jackie Schner and Emma Williams combined for 23 kills, 13 for Schner and 10 for Williams, as the first two Stormy Petrels in the kill column. Ellie Alfonso followed next with seven kills and Kinsey Wilson and Gabbi Phillips had six and five, respectively.
Four Petrels earned double figures in digs, led by Sophia Cendoya who registered 15. Alfonso and Legacy Guider had 13 apiece.
Oglethorpe came out strong with a 25-23 win of the first set. This was fueled by a 12-4 run to close the set, during which time the Petrels scored six straight points to tie the match at 19-19. Schner then had kills on back-to-back points to put Oglethorpe ahead 21-19, and Williams finished the set with two kills on the final three points.
The second set was equally close with Oglethorpe ahead 20-18 and later 22-21, but a 5-2 run from Hendrix saw the match even back up at a game apiece.
The third set then put Hendrix into the lead for good as the Warriors closed on a 5-1 run, and they used that momentum to run away with a 14-7 run to end the match in the fourth set.
With the result, Oglethorpe finished the season with a record of 10-15 after starting the season 5-2 and ending the regular season on a four-match winning streak.
