Box Score DEMOREST, Ga.—Sydni Donovan posted a double-double with 25 points and 14 rebounds, but the Oglethorpe women's basketball team lost to Piedmont 84-77 Sunday afternoon. The loss moved the Stormy Petrels to 0-2 after they played two close games over the first weekend of the year.
Donovan became already the third Oglethorpe player this season to post a double-double across the two games, and she and Nikki Reed became the fourth and fifth with double figures for scoring. Reed scored 10 points and added five assists.
Oglethorpe came out strong with a big first quarter, as a 9-2 run helped the Petrels go ahead 21-12 at the first break. Reed scored four of her 10 points during the run, and Carley Bell hit one of her three 3-pointers to cap the run.
From there, Piedmont stormed back with a big second quarter to take the lead at the half and led nearly the whole way through the second half. Oglethorpe cut the deficit to 53-51 late in the third quarter and to 73-70 late in the fourth quarter, both on baskets by Donovan, but would get no closer. Donovan even converted a three-point play to make it 79-75 in the final minute, but the Lions held on.
Up next, Oglethorpe stays on the road for the next four games, starting with Amherst in Wenham, Massachusetts, on Friday, Nov. 12. The first home game of the season is set for Wednesday, Nov. 24, against Asbury.
