Men's basketball tops Berry in SAA opener

Box Score

ATLANTA—Four Stormy Petrels scored double figures, and the Oglethorpe men's basketball team outscored Berry 6-2 over the final minute of the game to come away with an 83-80 victory in the Southern Athletic Association opener Saturday night in Dorough Field House.

Uba Ezigbo led all scorers with 18 while Lane Foster and Jack Murrah scored 15 apiece, and Will Koch had 10.

Murrah scored one of the biggest baskets of the game, knocking down a triple from the wing to put the Petrels up 75-73 with 2:37 left. It came a few minutes before Dimetri Chambers scored a big basket of his own with 51 seconds left, driving to the right side and finishing with a tough basket underneath for an and-one. Chambers' made free throw put the Petrels ahead 80-78 before helping seal the game with a couple more made free throws 20 seconds later.

The game was close nearly the whole way. With six ties and 14 lead changes, the game never saw either team leading by more than eight, and only a couple of times more than five. That was the halftime differential, in fact, as Oglethorpe led 43-38, but a 10-0 run from Berry swung the lead into a five-point favor for the Vikings.

Oglethorpe answered that run with an 11-4 run to go back into the lead, and teams once again traded blows over the final 10 minutes.

Chambers scored five of his nine points in the final minute but saw his streak of 39 straight games scoring double figures come to an end. It was only the third time in 43 games of his career he was held to less than 10.

Sone came next in the scoring column with seven points next to 10 rebounds and four assists. Foster's 15 points came alongside six assists and only two turnovers.

Up next, Oglethorpe heads to South Carolina for games against Bob Jones and Warren Wilson on Friday-Saturday, Dec. 17-18. The Petrels return home on Wednesday-Thursday, Dec. 29-30, for games against Spalding and Piedmont.
