The Oglethorpe women's basketball team secured a share of the SAA regular season title last week, marking the program's third such SAA title and fourth overall conference regular season championship. The Stormy Petrels tied Millsaps with one loss apiece and the two teams will share the crown. In addition, the Petrels remained fifth in the latest D3hoops.com women's Top 15, released Tuesday morning by the website, coming in one spot ahead of No. 6 Millsaps.
The Petrels hold the second seed in the upcoming SAA tournament, set to take place in Jackson, Mississippi, on the campus of Millsaps Friday and Saturday. The Majors garnered the No. 1 seed due to a better win percentage than the Petrels, despite the two teams tying in the loss column. Oglethorpe takes on third-seeded Rhodes Friday at 7 p.m. Eastern in the semifinals, and would take on the winner of Millsaps-Centre in the championship Saturday at 4 p.m. with a win.
The top five of the poll remained unchanged from the previous release. Hope again held down the No. 1 spot, accruing 14 of a possible 15 first-place votes. East Texas Baptist garnered the other vote and slid in at No. 2. Trine and Wartburg remained at third and fourth, respectively. Simpson, Texas-Dallas, DePauw and Wheaton (Illinois) filled out Nos. 7-10, respectively.
D3hoops.com, which is devoted to promoting and covering NCAA Division III basketball year-round, released its first poll of the 2020-21 season the first week of February, and pared it from the usual 25 teams to 10 to account for the smaller number of teams playing during the COVID-19 pandemic. The poll widened from 10 teams to 15 later in the month due to more Division III teams returning to play, and the number of voters and teams voted on may continue to change from week to week. The poll is currently voted on by a panel of 15 coaches, sports information directors and media members from across the country.
