The Oglethorpe volleyball team fell 3-0 to the second-seeded Birmingham-Southern Panthers Saturday evening in the semifinals of the SAA tournament in Mount Berry, Georgia. The defeat ended the Stormy Petrels' season at 6-5 overall, and they finished a program-high third in the league with a 6-4 mark in SAA play.

The teams were even early in the first set, but the Panthers pushed out to a 19-11 lead after the score had been tied 9-9. They pushed that advantage all the way to 23-13, but the Petrels mounted a big comeback from that point. They outscored their opponent 8-1 over the next nine points to pull to within three, 24-21. That gave the Panthers set point, however, and they took advantage by securing the 25-21 win.

The two teams went back and forth in the second, both holding small leads but neither able to push out to an advantage of greater than three points. With the score tied 20-20, though, Birmingham-Southern went on a 5-1 run to close out the stanza and take a 2-0 lead in the match. 

The Panthers slowly pulled out to a 15-7 advantage as they looked to close out the match. They were able to keep the Petrels at arm's length the rest of the way and secure the 25-18 win in the third set. 

Freshman outside hitter Ellie Alfonso led the way for Oglethorpe with 14 kills and a .220 hitting percentage while junior setter Emma Williams tallied 29 assists and 11 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Jackie Schner recorded 13 digs while senior middle hitter Ta'Korya Green posted four total blocks.
