Box Score 2 The Oglethorpe volleyball team earned a pair of victories over the Millsaps Majors Saturday at Dorough Field House, clinching a spot in the four-team SAA Tournament in the process. The Stormy Petrels beat the Majors 3-0 in the first match and 3-1 in the second to improve to 6-4 on the season.
The Petrels won the opening match 25-13, 25-20, 25-17. They completely dominated the Majors in the first set, getting out to an 11-3 lead and never looking back. The home side hit .464 for the stanza while Millsaps came in at minus-.032. They picked up in the second set where they left off in the first, outscoring Millsaps 9-0 to start the set. The Majors came back with an 8-2 run to pull to within 15-13, but Oglethorpe reasserted control with five straight points and built a 20-13 lead. The Petrels then closed it out in the third set, outhitting their opponent .361-to-.062. They built an 18-8 lead, essentially putting the set away early.
Senior middle hitter Ta'Korya Green, who was honored for Senior Day prior to the match along with defensive specialist Hailee Bugg and utility player Malisa Reichard, tallied 11 kills, six blocks, and hit .529 for the match. Junior setter Emma Williams recorded 31 assists and freshman libero Sofia Cendoya led the Petrels with 16 digs.
The Petrels took the second match 25-14, 18-25, 25-19, 25-14. They got off to an outstanding start once again in the first set, using a 7-1 spurt midway through the stanza to extend a four-point lead to a 10-point lead, 19-9. After cruising to a victory in that set, the Petrels briefly took a step back in the second set. Millsaps used a 9-1 run to turn an 8-4 deficit into a 10-7 lead. The Majors finished on a 5-1 run to take the set 25-18.
Oglethorpe got right back to their outstanding play in the third set, jumping out to a 7-2 lead. Later in the set, they went on an 11-3 run to build an insurmountable 21-12 advantage. The Petrels then closed the match out in the fourth set, using an 8-1 run to build a 12-4 advantage early in the stanza. The Petrels then held on and cruised to a 25-14 victory in the final set to secure the match.
Green added 10 more kills to her ledger, while freshman outside hitter Ellie Alfonso and freshman right-side hitter Cate Rosenthal each collected 11 kills. Williams contributed 44 assists while Cendoya added 15 digs.
The Petrels currently sit tied with Hendrix for third in the SAA. They now enter the final weekend of the regular season, and they'll take on first-place Berry who's currently ranked sixth in the country. They'll battle the Vikings on Saturday, April 10, in a doubleheader at noon and 3 p.m.
