Petrels come up short in second SAA contest

Box Score

ATLANTA—A double-double of 14 kills and 10 digs from Jackie Schner, plus eight kills from Briella Kohler, were not enough in Oglethorpe's second Southern Athletic Association loss of the season. The Stormy Petrels fell to Birmingham-Southern 3-1 (25-22, 19-25, 25-17, 25-1) Saturday.

The loss set Oglethorpe back to 5-4 (0-2 SAA), although first two matches of the SAA season have come against the top two teams in the league according to the SAA preseason coaches poll. This included a loss to No. 7 Berry earlier this week.

Some of the runs

Oglethorpe held the lead late in the first set but a 14-5 run from BSC to close the frame gave the Panthers the early edge in what proved to be a pivotal point early in the match. The Petrels responded, however, with a huge run to start the second set, Schner serving nine straight points to help give Oglethorpe a 9-0 lead.

Oglethorpe held onto that advantage the rest of the way, but it would then be the Panthers who would bounce back in the third frame. They went ahead to a 5-1 lead before a run of 5-0 midway through the set gave them a 20-12 lead.

Similarly in the fourth set, Birmingham-Southern led 9-5 before a 6-1 run helped them go ahead 18-12, and the Panthers held on from there.

More numbers

Following Schner and Kohler in the kill column were Emelia Sengstock, Emma Williams and Kinsey Wilson, who each tallied six kills. Williams added 21 assists and four digs while Kylee Zimmer led in digs with 20.

The Petrels again posted a huge blocking effort with 13 total team blocks. This included a pair of solo blocks from Ta'Korya Green, eight assisted blocks from Wilson and seven assisted blocks from Williams.

Up next

Oglethorpe hosts Millsaps Sunday at 1 p.m. Millsaps came to Dorough Field House two weeks ago for the Stormy Petrel Classic and matched Oglethorpe's perfect 3-0 record across the two-day tournament.
