Donovan's near triple-double leads Petrels past Tigers

Box Score

ATLANTA – Sydni Donovan was two rebounds and two blocks shy of a triple-double, and the Oglethorpe women's basketball team won its first Southern Athletic Association game of the season with a 67-50 victory over Sewanee Friday night at Dorough Field House.

Donovan's line featured 10 points, eight rebounds, and career highs of eight blocks and five assists, alongside only one turnover and two steals.

"I was super happy for the team to see a successful result tonight," said Head Coach Alex Richey. "We are making significant improvements on the defensive end the last few games through hard work in practice, and we wanted to take that a step further and finish possessions on that end with an improved effort on the rebounding, which we were able to do. Offensively, I thought the ball movement was very good, and we had great balance from multiple players but also from multiple positions on the court, which is certainly what we want."

Rose Dolmovich and Jessamy Gaetanos joined Donovan with career highs of their own. Dolmovich scored a career high 12 points, all in the second half. Gaetanos scored a career high 14, 12 of which came in the second half.

It was indeed a story of the second half, as a pivotal run early after the break set the two teams apart for good. After a 5-0 run to start the third quarter gave Sewanee its only lead of the game, Oglethorpe answered with a 10-0 run highlighted by five points from Dolmovich, three from Carly Bell and two points and a block from Donovan.

The Stormy Petrels never again trailed.

Sewanee trimmed the deficit to four, 37-33, by the end of the third quarter, but another big run from Oglethorpe put the lead back out to double figures by the seven-minute mark of the fourth.

Gaetanos' 14 points led Oglethorpe while three others reached double figures in scoring. Carley Bell (13) came next, followed by Dolmovich (12) and Donovan (10).

Up next, Oglethorpe welcomes Centre back to Dorough Field House Sunday for a 12 p.m. game. The game time recently was moved up to 12 in order to avoid incoming weather. For the most up to date changes to the schedule, please visit the schedule page on www.gopetrels.com.
