ROME, Ga.-- Oglethorpe's season ended on Friday night after the Stormy Petrels fell to Berry in a 2-1 loss.
Berry caused problems for Oglethorpe in the first 20 minutes, but the Petrels started to gain momentum after that and eventually were rewarded for it in the second half when Ethan Nunes scored in the 53rd minute to give Oglethorpe the lead.
For a few minutes, things were looking good for Oglethorpe, but this feeling did not last long, as Berry was awarded a penalty just two minutes later. Henry Asbill successfully slotted home the penalty kick to tie it for Berry. John Akin's side could have retaken the lead in the 62nd minute when Nunes took a shot that hit the left post.
Oglethorpe conceded another penalty in the 68th minute, and Berry's Nathan Carlson was able to successfully put the ball into the back of the net for Berry as Ethan Harrison was sent the wrong way.
After being a goal up briefly, Oglethorpe found themselves down 2-1, and the pressure was on them to change the situation. Three minutes after Berry scored their second goal, Oglethorpe had an opportunity to score an equalizer but a great shot from Hayden Binfield hit the crossbar. The team did everything they could to get back into the match, including a powerful shot from Nunes in the 86th minute that was saved by Berry goalkeeper Jose Palacios.
A tough night at the office, it was a physical match on all fronts in a high-stakes match between two teams that comprise a strong regional rivalry.
