SEWANEE, Tenn. - In their second and final game at Sewanee's Lon Varnell Classic, the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels defeated the Warren Wilson Owls 117-94.
Eleven Petrels made their way into the scoring column, and six of them reached double digits. Senior Ryan Jenei led the Petrels this game with 18 points and five rebounds. Uba Ezigbo followed with 13 points and five rebounds, and Robert Reisman (11), Mason Kemp (11), Jordan James (11) and Dylan Bennifield (10) all hit double figures.
"Tonight was another good win," said Head Coach Philip Ponder. "They play an unusual style, and I thought that for the most part, we adapted well. We have a lot of room to grow, but considering how young we are, I like how we are playing so far. We got contributions from a lot of different guys today, just like we did last night. We have to start games better, but overall, I was really pleased with our opening weekend."
Warren Wilson began the game with a 12-0 run against the Petrels, and was stubborn about holding that lead.
Jenei recorded Oglethorpe's first points of the game with a 3-pointer assisted by Chris Feeny. From there, the Petrels were able to find their momentum and close the gap in the score. After a bit of back and forth, Oglethorpe went on a 15-0 run, pushing into the lead with a score of 24-19 and less than nine minutes remaining in the half.
The Petrels then took a 13-2 run, bringing the score up to 37-23 and solidifying Oglethorpe's lead. The Owls attempted to catch up, but Oglethorpe finished the first half on top, with a score of 51-36. Â
After the break, the Petrels quickly picked up where they left off as Malachi Dooley made a layup in the first 30 seconds to 12-6 run. The Owls would continue to fight to reclaim the lead, but the Petrels were too much for them to handle.
