Volleyball falls in SAA semifinal

ROME, Ga.— After a season full of career highs, tough matchups against nationally ranked opponents, and a couple of upset victories in between, Oglethorpe's volleyball season came to a close as the host No. 10 Berry College Vikings defeated the Stormy Petrels three sets to none in the Southern Athletic Association tournament semifinals on Saturday.

The Match

The first set showed the Petrels and Vikings neck and neck at 7-7 before the Vikings would separate themselves with a 7-2 run for an early 14-9 lead. That 14-9 lead for Berry would turn into a 19-11 lead before the Viking won the set 25-17.

The second set started off with the Vikings taking an early lead and continuing from there to win 25-13. The Petrels fought all throughout the third set, but ultimately Berry would go on to win the third set by a margin of 25-21.

The Stats

In the Petrels' final match of the 2022 season, it was junior Ellie Alfonso that led the offense with nine kills. Senior Jackie Schner added seven kills, juniors Kaitlyn Bassett and Cate Rosenthal posted six and five kills, respectively.

Sophomore Gabbi Phillips was able to assist her teammates 24 times in the match and record 15 digs, while junior Sofia Cendoya posted a team-high 19 digs.

Season Notes

The match capped another outstanding season for Oglethorpe volleyball, which won a program record seven matches in SAA play while tallying its most overall wins in a season (14) since the 2015 squad won 15. Friday night's quarterfinal win over Sewanee also marked the first SAA tournament win in program history.

With the match, seniors Schner, Emelia Sengstock and Melanie Davis finished their incredible four-year careers and a great senior season for the Stormy Petrel volleyball program.
