Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Chloe Clemensen

Men's basketball comes up short against Brevard

ATLANTA – In the first game of Oglethorpe's Jack Berkshire Classic, the Stormy Petrels were winded after taking on Brevard College and fell 75-70 to the Tornados.

Nine Petrels made their way into the scoring column, three of whom reached double digits. Uba Ezigbo led with 16 points, Ryan Jenei followed with 15, and freshman Jonathan Awoleye with a career high of 12. Ezigbo, Jackson Kemp and Malachi Dooley each recorded three assists.

Oglethorpe was the first to score, with two made free throws from Jackson Kemp. Brevard seemed to have the upper hand for a majority of the first period, but Robert Reisman and Dylan Bennifield brought the Petrels back on top to 19-17 with nine minutes remaining.

From there, the Petrels went on a 10–3 run against the Tornadoes, which ended with an impressive dunk from Awoleye and a quick steal and layup from Jackson Kemp to push the Petrels up 29-20. However, this seemed to ignite Brevard, as they reclaimed the lead in the final minutes, and sent the Stormy Petrels into halftime down 35-32.

Awoleye was eager for the Petrels to make a comeback, recording a steal and another impressive dunk in the first 15 seconds of the second half. Brevard fought to hold their lead until seven minutes in, when a layup from Mason Kemp tied the score at 47-47. Once again, the Tornadoes took off with a run against the Petrels, and would hold this lead for the remainder of the game. Despite a layup from Jenei and two made free throws from Malachi Dooley in the last 10 seconds, the Stormy Petrels were victim to another close game, falling 75-70 to Brevard College.

As a team, Oglethorpe recorded a 44.8% field goal percentage, and a 73.7% free throw percentage.
