Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Sydni Donovan posted another double-double and the Oglethorpe women's basketball team countered a slow start with a strong finish but in the end came up short to Sewanee 64-57 Friday night on the road. Donovan's double-double featured 22 points and 10 rebounds and marked her fourth double-double of the season, second in the last three games, and seventh of her career.
Oglethorpe suffered from a slow start and played from behind the rest of the way but showed tremendous poise down the final stretch. Trailing by as many as 16 in the first half and by 20 late in the third quarter, the Stormy Petrels cut the deficit to five, 51-46, with six minutes to go.
Emma Perna forced a turnover and scored on the other end to cap the 10-0 run that closed that gap, but five would be as close as the Petrels would get.
Amy Vazquez scored a basket with 54 seconds left to make it 60-55, but the Tigers made both free throws on the next possession to help seal the game.
Donovan's 22 points marked the fourth time this season she scored 20 or more. She was followed by
Carly Henderson with 10 and Vazquez with nine.
Up next, Oglethorpe faces Centre on Sunday at 1 p.m. before closing the regular season at Berry on Wednesday, Feb. 16, at 6 p.m. The Southern Athletic Association tournament will begin the following Sunday.
