Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball drops season-opening twin bill to Maryville

ATLANTA – Colby James threw five strong innings in game one before Carson Weir allowed only a three-run homer in an otherwise scoreless effort over four innings in the Oglethorpe baseball team's season-opening doubleheader Saturday at Hermance Stadium. Oglethorpe fell 8-1 in game one and 3-1 in game two.

James surrendered only a pair of long balls, one in the third and one in the fifth, that proved to be all the scoring Maryville would need in the first game. It was 3-0 upon James' departure, and the Stormy Petrel offense only got one of those runs back.

Will Arnold drove in that lone run of game one with a two-out triple to left center, scoring Andrew Hutcherson. Hutcherson reached in the previous at-bat on a walk.

Rajan Sampat doubled in game two's only run for the Stormy Petrels, smacking a shot to right center to score Sam Mills who reached on a double of his own. By then, the Scots had already taken the lead, again via a home run, and it proved to be once again all the scoring they needed.

Oglethorpe struck out 15 Maryville hitters in the 16 innings of play. Weir tallied five of those in four innings.

Oglethorpe and Maryville finish the three-game series with the finale Sunday at 1 p.m. back here on Anderson Field.
