HOOVER, Ala. – Mason Pearcy drove in the winning run with one out in the bottom of the ninth to send the Oglethorpe baseball team to a 3-2 victory over Mississippi University for Women Tuesday in a neutral nonconference tilt in Alabama. The win was the second in a row and third in the last four games for the Stormy Petrels.
Oglethorpe needed only five batters to score the game's first run, but it was hardly a one-sided affair. After Jonathan Cruz made it a 1-0 game, Will Arnold answered MUW's game-tying unearned run in the fourth with an RBI single in the fifth to make it 2-1. A bases loaded hit batter in the top of the eighth would tie the game once again, but Pearcy had the final answer in the bottom of the ninth.
Pearcy's game-winning hit drove in Harrison Hall who led the inning off with a walk, then moved to second on Matthew Gill's bunt single.
Three Stormy Petrels were in the multihit category in the win. Carter Guarino went 2-for-3 with a run, Arnold went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Pearcy went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Andrew Noack earned the win, his second in as many decisions, with a relief effort that saw him go the final 1.2 innings scoreless. Noack entered the game with two on and one out before helping the Petrels escape the jam with only one run.
Starting pitcher Michael Sarzen retired 10 of the first 11 before surrendering his first hit in the fourth. He ended up with a line of 4.2 innings, four hits, one unearned run, one walk and seven strikeout.
Up next, the Petrels host their Southern Athletic Association opener when Rhodes comes to Hermance Stadium for a three-game set starting Saturday with a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
