ROME, Ga. – A couple of big innings late in both games of a doubleheader sunk the Oglethorpe baseball team to two losses as the Stormy Petrels opened a Southern Athletic Association series at Berry on Sunday. Berry won game one 13-7 after scoring eight runs in the eighth inning then won game two 14-3 after scoring 12 runs over the last four innings.
Five straight batters reached for Oglethorpe in the top of the third inning of game one, and it looked like Oglethorpe was well on its way to victory. Jonathan Cruz had a two-RBI single in the inning that tied the game at 3-3, then a Berry error helped Oglethorpe take the lead 5-3 two batters later. Sam Mills later drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth before Will Arnold made it 7-5 with an RBI single in the eighth.
Oglethorpe needed only six outs to secure the game one win but a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth followed by six more runs on seven more hits saw the Vikings take the lead.
A similar outcome transpired in game two. Mills drove in Arnold with a single in the top of the first and a double in the top of the third, the first giving the Petrels a lead and the second tying the game at 2-2. Then, Carson Weir plated Mills with an RBI single through the right side to give the Petrels a 3-2 lead. However, Berry would do all the rest of the scoring, including four runs in the third and six runs in the sixth.
Arnold led Oglethorpe going 4-for-5 in game one before Weir led in game two going 3-for-3.
Oglethorpe and Berry finish the series Monday with a single game at 3 p.m. The Stormy Petrels will be home again on Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday of the upcoming week.
