ORLANDO, Fla. -- After losing its first match of the season in a close result against Hamilton, Oglethorpe quickly got back on the winning track with big wins over St. Ambrose and Hope Monday in Orlando.Â
Daniel Cohen (6-0),
Zoe Raymond (4-0) and
Tony Molinet (2-0) all kept their perfect singles records intact. Cohen posted two straight-sets wins in Oglethorpe's pair of wins after rallying from a set down to win 10-8 in a super tiebreaker in the team's loss. Raymond also won in a super tiebreaker against Hamilton and was well on his way to another win in the Hope match before it was halted due to the match being decided. Molinet won in straight sets in Oglethorpe's win over St. Ambrose.Â
Cohen,
Cameron Burkes and Raymond posted the victories for Oglethorpe in the 6-3 loss to Hamilton, although the Stormy Petrels responded with decided wins over St. Ambrose (8-1) and Hope (5-2), the Hope match even looking to be 7-2 before play was halted. Against St. Ambrose, Oglethorpe started with wins in all three doubles matches, then swept through the first five singles matches in straight sets.
Ameya Dani won 6-0, 7-5 in the No. 1 spot, and Cohen, Raymond, Burkes and Molinet combined to drop only five games in Nos. 2 through 5.
Later in the day against Hope, Dani won his first set in a tiebreak 7-5 on the way to another straight-sets win, and Cohen,
Vincent Claussen and
Kirkman Kiker all won in straight sets as well at Nos. 2 through 4. This came after Oglethorpe dropped two of the three doubles points to Hope, Raymond and Burkes picking up the doubles win at No. 3, 7-5 in a tiebreak.
Oglethorpe continues its current trip in Orlando with matches Wednesday and Thursday against Goucher and Luther. Southern Athletic Association play will resume after that, as the Petrels host Hendrix on Saturday, April 2, in their next home match.
