ORLANDO, Fla. -- It all came down to the match at No. 2 singles, and
Sydney Dattilo came through in the clutch to send Oglethorpe's women's tennis team to a 5-4 victory over St. Ambrose Monday afternoon at Lake Cane Tennis Center. Teams were knotted at 4-4 with all eyes on the final match, and Dattilo won it on one of the most dramatic points of the match to finish off St. Ambrose's Maggie Sullivan with a winner down the line.Â
The win was the fourth of the season for the Stormy Petrels, who played to two other losses in the 24 hours surrounding the close win over St. Ambrose. This included a hard-fought loss to No. 37 Hope a few hours later.
Izzy Forster and
Brianna Ali played the closest match in doubles with a loss in a tiebreak to Saydee Johns and Taylor Truman, and Forster, Dattilo and
Alyssa Merletti all played competitive matches on the first three singles courts.Â
Several other winners proved to be just as key in Oglethorpe's victory over St. Ambrose. Forster won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles while Merletti won 7-5, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.
Adeline Horton won the closest win of the day by bouncing back from a second-set loss to win a super tiebreaker 11-9. Dattilo and
Katie Hunter won an easy match at No. 3 doubles, 8-2.Â
Dattilo's win Monday early in the day marked her team co-leading fourth win of the season, matching Merletti with a 4-3 record. Dattilo also leads the team in doubles victories with three.Â
Oglethorpe continues its current trip in Orlando with matches Wednesday and Thursday against Kalamazoo and Luther. Southern Athletic Association play will resume after that, as the Petrels host Hendrix on Saturday, April 2, in their next home match.
