ROME, Ga. – Daniel Cohen, Kirkman Kiker and Zoe Raymond all won for the second time in as many tries this season to help Oglethorpe start Southern Athletic Association play with a win, 7-2 over Berry Saturday afternoon. The Stormy Petrels took two of the doubles points before running off victories in five of the six singles.
The run of singles wins started on court two with Vincent Claussen, who defeated Kyle Lutian 6-2, 6-3. Cohen, Kiker, Cameron Burkes and Raymond won at Nos. 3 through 6. Cohen improved to 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 win; Kiker improved to 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-1 win; Burkes had the closest win of the day, winning 6-4, 6-4; and Raymond improved to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 win.
Burkes and Raymond together improved to 2-0 at No. 3 doubles with an 8-4 victory over Berry's Fant Smith and Bohdan Higley. Claussen and Kiker won at No. 2 doubles, also 8-4.
Oglethorpe's women also started their SAA slate, heading into the match with a 2-0 record, but suffered their first loss, falling 9-0.
The Stormy Petrels continue the season next Friday, March 11, with a home match against Belhaven, set to start at 3 p.m. They will return to SAA play in April.
