BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Late scoring proved to be key in several wins for Oglethorpe's baseball team this season, but Friday evening it proved to be the Stormy Petrels' demise. Leading nationally-ranked No. 3 Birmingham Southern 6-3 with six outs to go, the Petrels gave up six runs in the eighth and fell 9-6.
The loss ended a great season for first-year head coach Kellen Greer, who led the team to its highest win count since 2018. The Petrels won five of seven Southern Athletic Association series this season, including sweeps over Sewanee and Centre.
Sam Mills and Mason Pearcy gave the Petrels the early lead with a sacrifice fly and an RBI single in the first inning. Things continued to look good in the third inning when Connor Ledet and Andrew Noack also singled and sacrifice flied runs home to make it 4-2.
Then, Carson Weir doubled home Mills in the seventh followed by Pearcy flying home Weir to make it 6-3. Jake Hill put a zero on the board for BSC in the seventh, but the top-seeded Panthers answered in a big way in the eighth.
Harry Paul got the start and went 5.1 innings with only three runs before Hill went the next 1.2 innings scoreless.
