Box Score 2 WENHAM, Ma. — Oglethorpe women's volleyball faced off against Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Gordon College in a doubleheader on their last day of the Gordon Invitational. The Stormy Petrels went 1-1 on the day improving to 2-1 on the season, with both wins on the season coming in three straight sets.
Oglethorpe vs MIT
Oglethorpe fell three sets to none at the hands of No. 11-ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the first of Saturday's two matchups. The Petrels lost the first set by a score of 25-17, the second set showcased a closer competition with MIT taking the set 25-19, with the Petrels falling in the last set in extra points 26-24. Despite the final outcome, Oglethorpe managed to end the competition with more attacks, kills, assists, and digs than the Beavers of MIT.
Picking up where they left off Friday evening, senior Jackie Schner and junior Cate Rosenthal continue to impress with their performances and lead Oglethorpe on the stat sheet. Schner added 10 kills and 11 digs in Saturday's outing while Rosenthal had a team high 12 kills and notched another six digs in the competition.
Yet again, sophomore Gabbi Phillips and junior Sofia Cendoya lead the team's defensive efforts with Phillips' team high 22 digs followed by Cendoya's 12. Juniors Kaitlyn Bassett and Rosenthal led the team in blocks, tallying three blocks apiece. Phillips was responsible for 24 of Oglethorpe's 35 assists.
Oglethorpe vs Gordon College
After Saturday's initial match, the Petrels were ready to change the outcome for their second match of the day. After what was an intense and high-scoring first set, the Petrels soared through the next two sets, ending the competition in three straight sets by a score of 30-28, 25-16, and 25-13.
Senior Jackie Schner continues to dominate as she recorded a season high 18 kills, two kills short of tying her career high— she also added another eight digs. Junior Ellie Alfonso posted 11 kills and seven digs in the victory over Gordon along with two service aces.
The standout efforts of Cendoya and Phillips continued to impress as Cendoya totaled 17 more digs to her 12 from the day's earlier match while sophomore Phillips set a new season high totaling 35 of the team's 38 assists after setting her season high at 24 in the previous match.

The Stormy Petrels face their northern neighbors Piedmont University in Oglethorpe's home opener Tuesday, Sept 6, at 7 p.m. Following the nonconference matchup, Oglethorpe heads to Rome, Georgia, to compete in the Berry National Invitational Tournament September 9-10 where they will battle Covenant College, Averett University and Ohio Northern.
