ATLANTA — After three close losses, the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels moved back in the win column after defeating the Owls of Mississippi University for Women 69-38 on Wednesday.
Freshman Morgan Skipper, a guard from Atlanta, had a team-high and career-high 15 points while adding six rebounds and two steals. Two other freshmen continued to make an impact on the court. Mia Geveke added a career-high 13 points including three makes from beyond the arc, and Gabby Hudson totaled eight points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.Â
Other career highs included nine rebounds, seven of which were on the offensive end, from Olivia Tucker; six rebounds and three assists from Malia Melton; four assists from Hudson; four steals from Mahkayla Premo; and eight rebounds from Adrianna Atkinson.
As a whole, the Petrels knocked down 11 threes while shooting 33% from the field. They pulled in 64 rebounds to mark a season high in that category. Oglethorpe also scored 34 points off the bench.
The Petrels took the Owls by storm, doubling the Owls' points in the initial quarter of play thanks to eight first-quarter points from Skipper leading the Petrels to a 16-8 lead heading into the second quarter.Â
Oglethorpe was able to create separation from the Owls thanks to their defensive pressure. The Petrels scored 14 second-quarter points as the Owls scored six, and Oglethorpe led Mississippi University for Women by a margin of 30-14 at the half.Â
The Petrels started the second half of action with an early third quarter 11-0 run to open up the scoring. After the Petrels dropped 22 in the quarter and the Owls responded with 13 of their own, Oglethorpe would hold onto the lead heading into the final quarter up 52-27.Â
After an 11-point performance from the Owls and 17 points from the Petrels in the fourth quarter, the game came to a close with a final score of 69-38 with Oglethorpe on top.
With this win, Oglethorpe played its last non-Southern Athletic Association opponent of the regular season.
