Women’s basketball drops close one on the road

MEMPHIS, Tenn.— The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels traveled to Memphis, Tennessee, to take on the Lynx of Rhodes College in their sixth Southern Athletic Association matchup this season. After holding on to the lead for the first few minutes of the game, the Petrels would trail the Lynx ultimately falling to 62-48.

Freshman Malia Melton led the Stormy Petrels with 13 points, her third straight game in double figures.

Melton got off to a hot start in the first quarter dropping six of Oglethorpe's 10 first-quarter points, but Rhodes' Alexis Mathangani responded with 12 points herself, with the quarter coming to a close at 19-10 Lynx over the Petrels.

A defensive effort in the second quarter kept the margin closer as the Petrels scored 11 and kept the Lynx to 14. Oglethorpe recorded three steals in the second quarter thanks to efforts led by freshman Mahkayla Premo and Gabby Hudson.

Both teams came out of the half firing, Oglethorpe with 14 and Rhodes with 18. The Petrels shot a perfect 6-6 from the free-throw line in the third quarter. Six petrels contributed to the scoring in the third, as the Petrels closed out the final minute and a half of the quarter on a 6-0 scoring run thanks to Melton and Premo.

The final quarter of play came to a close with Oglethorpe's nine points, all scored by freshmen, to Rhodes' 15 points.

Keimarya Rivera, fresh off an SAA player of the week award, nearly dropped her fourth double-double of the season with nine points and eight rebounds. The freshman from Canton, Georgia, went 5-6 from the free-throw line and totaled 30 minutes on the court.

Oglethorpe moved to 7-9 as they approached the halfway mark of Southern Athletic Association play.
