Petrels fall in penalty kicks in SAA tournament

CONWAY, Ark.—The Oglethorpe women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking decision at Hendrix in the quarterfinals of the Southern Athletic Association tournament Saturday afternoon. After 110 minutes of scoreless action resulted in a 0-0 draw, the Stormy Petrels lost the penalty shootout 3-2.

Harlow Cregar and Jade Anderson stepped up with conversion of their penalty kicks, Cregar leading off the shootout with a score on the left side of the frame and Anderson putting the Petrels ahead 2-1 two kicks later with a similar placement. Oglethorpe was held without any more tallies, however, and fell 3-2.

Senior goalkeeper Haley Lowell had a huge save with the game on the line as Hendrix looked to score on its fifth kick with the winning goal. Lowell made the save to her left, but the Warriors would convert the next one to advance.

The conditions of the match were far from favorable as heavy rain soaked the field for nearly all 110+ minutes of action.

With the decision, Oglethorpe ended the season with a record of 6-5-4 (2-4-1 SAA). The Petrels finished with six shutouts, including the last two games, and only allowed one goal in the last three games.
