Petrels bested by Millsaps

JACKSON, Miss.—The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels fell 3-1 to the Millsaps Majors in one of the final Southern Athletic Association matches of the season.

Ashlynn Stephens led with 11 kills and Sofia Cendoya recorded 20 digs. Hannah Palmer followed with nine kills and 13 digs, both career highs. Briella Kohler tallied seven digs, five kills and four service aces. Gabbi Phillips made 15 assists and Autumn Lilly had 13.

Millsaps earned the first point of the game, but the Petrels were ready for battle. Oglethorpe went on to gain an impressive 14-5 lead, which ultimately set them up for victory. The Petrels first reached set point after a kill from Ashlynn Stephens, which was foiled as the Majors managed to do the same twice over. Remaining cool under the mounting pressure, Stephens delivered a service ace for a 27-25 win.

The Petrels and the Majors were neck and neck for the entire second set, but Millsaps pulled ahead at the last second for a 25-23 win. The Majors were able to gain a slight advantage toward the end of the third set as well, adding another 25-23 victory under their belts.

The fourth and final set was draining for Oglethorpe, with Millsaps holding a major upper hand the entire time. The Majors claimed a 25-14 win for the set, and a 3-1 win for the match.
