Oglethorpe crushes Covenant

ATLANTA – The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels defeated the Covenant Scots 95-77 earlier this afternoon, as Perry Robinson led with his third double-double of the season at 20 points and 11 rebounds.

Thirteen more Petrels made their way into the scoring column as Jordan James followed with 14 points, Mason Kemp with a season high of 12 points, and Malachi Dooley and Uba Ezigbo earning nine points each. Robinson also led in assists, totaling four, and James, Dooley, Jackson Kemp and Mark Asare all made three. Dylan Pumpian made a season high of five rebounds.

Oglethorpe was the first to score with a jumper from Robinson, and the Scots quickly responded with a layup. This 2-2 tie would be the only time in the game that Covenant would be on equal ground with the Petrels. From there, Dooley sank a 3-pointer then Robinson kicked off an 8-2 run that brought Oglethorpe a 13-5 lead. Later, an 8-0 run bulked by 3-pointers by M. Kemp and James gave Oglethorpe a 10-point lead at 21-11. The Petrels dominated the remainder of the first period, heading into halftime up 42-26.

The second half began with an 11-2 run, pushing Oglethorpe even further ahead. Covenant managed to recover some ground throughout the period, but the Petrels had given themselves more than enough of a cushion. Oglethorpe continued to outplay the Scots, and freshman Jack Thomas ended the game with a stellar dunk and a 95-77 victory over the Scots.

"This was a good win for us," said Head Coach Philip Ponder. "I thought we were really good defensively in the first half, and that's the best we have shot all year. That is the way we are capable of shooting, and if we can continue to do that, we are going to be pretty tough come January-February."
