ATLANTA—The Oglethorpe women's basketball team fell to Washington and Lee 89-52 Sunday evening inside Dorough Field House in the final game of the TownePlace Suites Classic. Sophomore Keimarya Rivera led the Stormy Petrels with 11 points.
Washington and Lee opened the game with two made 3-pointers in the first 100 seconds of the game and never looked back, leading the whole way and going ahead by double digits in the first quarter. The team hit seven threes in the first half on the way to a big lead at the break.
Thirteen Petrels entered the scoring column led by Rivera with 11 points. Kat Johnson followed with seven points and six rebounds, and Malia Melton had six points.
This was the first meeting between these two teams since Oglethorpe joined NCAA Division III in 1988. Washington and Lee currently receives votes in the latest national top 25 poll.
Up next, Oglethorpe has one more game in 2023 before turning its attention solely to Southern Athletic Association play in 2024. The final nonconference game will be Sunday, Dec. 31, at home against Worcester State. Opening tip is set for 3 p.m.
