Men’s basketball drops close game to Regis

ATLANTA – In the final game of the Jack Berkshire Classic sponsored by Holiday Inn Express, Perry Robinson led Oglethorpe with 23 points and 12 rebounds, but the Stormy Petrels ultimately fell 79-74 to the Regis Pride. Robinson made the all-tournament team to cap the two-day tournament event.

The double-double for Robinson was the fourth of the season, and Uba Ezigbo followed with a season high of 16 points. Ezigbo also recorded a season high of four steals while Jackson Kemp made 10 points and Dylan Pumpian had nine. Malachi Dooley made five rebounds and a season high of five assists.

"That was a tough one," said head coach Philip Ponder. "Our defense has not been as good in these two games after the break, so we have to improve that. I love the fact that we had 19 offensive rebounds for the second consecutive night and that kept us in the game tonight, but we uncharacteristically struggled from the free throw line and that made a big difference. We didn't do as well in our nonconference slate as I had hoped, but we are 1-0 in conference, and conference play is our only focus moving forward."

Robinson and J. Kemp began the game with good layups to give Oglethorpe a 6-0 head start. The Pride seemed to snap awake, quickly giving themselves the upper hand at 8-6. The Petrels tied things up at 10-10 then went on a 7-3 run for a 17-14 advantage. Regis continued to fight, but a majority of the first half was in Oglethorpe's favor. That is, until the final 30 seconds. The Pride sank a 3-pointer, but Dooley evened things out at 36-36 as the game headed into halftime.

The second half was much more of a battle for the Petrels, as Regis was the first to score. In cruel foreshadowing, the Pride managed to gain a small lead thanks to free throws. Oglethorpe did not give in without a fight, and even held the lead once toward the beginning of the period. Regis was really only able to gain a significant advantage in the final three minutes, leading to the Pride's 79-74 win to close out the Jack Berkshire Classic.
