Petrels spend spring break in Orlando

ORLANDO – The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels completed their annual spring break trip at the USTA National Campus, which resulted in three losses.

Day One Highlights

The Petrels began their trip with a match against Salisbury University and fell 6-3.

Sophomore Izzy Forster triumphed 6-4, 6-1 in No. 1 singles as Sydney Dattilo won 6-4, 6-2 in No. 2 singles. Alyssa Merletti cut it close in No. 3 singles, but ultimately fell 5-7, 7-5, 10-5. Forster and Dattilo combined for an 8-1 victory in No. 1 doubles.

Day Two Highlights

Oglethorpe took on William Smith College, which led to an 8-1 loss. Forster and Maddie Nolan combined for an 8-4 victory in No. 3 doubles as the Petrels' lone point of the match.

Day Three Highlights

The Stormy Petrels ended their trip with an unfortunate 7-2 loss to St. Catherine University.

Merletti won 6-4, 6-2 in No. 3 singles, while Forster and Brianna Ali combined for an 8-3 victory in No. 2 doubles.

Tournament Notes

  • This was the first time Oglethorpe faced Salisbury, William Smith College, and St. Catherine University in program history. 
  • While the women's matches were spread over three days, the men's team had theirs compressed into two days. 
  • After the trip, Forster leads the team with a 5-3 singles record.
  • Forster and Dattilo remain undefeated as a doubles team, and Forster remains undefeated in doubles overall.
  • Dattilo is now 7-2 in doubles overall, and Brianna Ali 5-2.

The Stormy Petrels will return home to begin Southern Athletic Association play by hosting Millsaps on Saturday, April 1, at 1 p.m.
