MEMPHIS—The Oglethorpe baseball team lost all three games of a Southern Athletic Association set Saturday and Sunday at Rhodes. Rhodes won the series-opening doubleheader 11-6 and 8-1 on Saturday before finishing the sweep Sunday with a 5-2 win.
Oglethorpe had a great chance to salvage the series with a victory in Sunday's finale but came up short in the late innings. After Rhodes took a 2-0 lead, Greg Johnson helped tie the game in the top of the sixth inning with an RBI ground ball that scored Nick Tarantino to make it 2-2. The lead would quickly go back into Rhodes favor, however, as the Lynx plated one in the bottom half to make it 3-2 then added another run in each of the seventh and eighth innings to go ahead 5-2.
Oglethorpe's eighth featured another chance to claw back, as Jonathan Cruz led off by reaching and the Petrels had runners on first and second with two out. However, a groundout ended the threat.
An inning later in Oglethorpe's final at-bat, Sam Mills reached on a two-out single, and the Petrels once again had two aboard with two out. Again, Rhodes escaped the danger, this time with a strikeout ending the threat.
