BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Back-to-back two-out hits from Nick Tarantino and Drew Jabaley gave the Oglethorpe baseball team a 2-0 lead in the fourth, but No. 7 Birmingham Southern scored five runs in the fifth and won 5-2 to eliminate the Stormy Petrels from the Southern Athletic Association tournament on Saturday.
The game was part of a three-game series to determine which team would join the three other series winners in advancing to the final stage of the SAA tournament. This was the first year the tournament was structured in this way.
Oglethorpe pushed both its runs across despite having two out and only one on in the inning. It happened with a Tarantino double to score Greg Johnson followed by a Jabaley single to score Tarantino.
With a 2-0 lead heading into the fifth, Oglethorpe looked primed to even the series and force a rubber game in what would have been the nightcap of a doubleheader. However, the seventh-ranked Panthers tied the game with a pair of one-out singles in the fifth, then took the lead an out later with a three-run homer.
That was all the scoring either team would do the rest of the way.
