Petrels dominate in first match of Quaker Classic

WILMINGTON, Ohio - In their road opener, the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels swept the Washington & Jefferson College Presidents 3-0 in their first match of the Quaker Classic, hosted by Wilmington College.

Ellie Alfonso and Briella Kohler led with nine kills each, followed by Cate Rosenthal with seven. Libero Sofia Cendoya recorded three aces and 13 digs. Alfonso totaled 11 digs and Autumn Lilly had 10. Overall, Oglethorpe tallied 38 kills compared to Washinton & Jefferson's 19.

Lilly served first for the Petrels, which opened the first set with four unanswered points for Oglethorpe. This set the precedent for the remainder of the set and ultimately the match. The Presidents were able to gain three points while Oglethorpe was sitting at set point, but a kill from Ashlynn Stephens secured a 25-20 win.

Alfonso began the second set with a kill, setting the Petrels up to stay in the lead the entire time. The Presidents seemed a bit more prepared, but Oglethorpe won the set 25-21.

Washington & Jefferson handed Oglethorpe the first point of the third and final set but were not able to make a recovery. The Presidents were able to briefly hold the lead, until three service aces from Camdyn George combined with kills from Kaitlyn Bassett, Kohler and Rosenthal put Oglethorpe up 8-4. The Petrels recorded a 25-19 win for a 3-0 match win.
