Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Pumpian’s late free throws, double-double lead Petrels in home win

ATLANTA—In a game that Oglethorpe otherwise struggled from the free-throw line, it was free throws in the closing seconds that helped seal the deal in a 62-61 Southern Athletic Association win over Millsaps Friday night inside Dorough Field House. Dylan Pumpian calmy knocked down both with 11.8 seconds left in a 60-60 game, Millsaps made one on the other end, and the Stormy Petrels held on to improve to an SAA-best 5-1 league record.

The game was close the whole way and yet saw only six ties and eight lead changes. The final tie came with 1:54 left when Millsaps' Devin Harris made a free throw to make it 60-60. Both teams turned up the defensive heat from there, holding each other scoreless until Pumpian came up with a huge defensive rebound, getting fouled in the process.

Oglethorpe had gone 10-of-21 from the line until that point, but Pumpian hit them both to help the Petrels escape with the home win.

"It was an ugly win, but we will take it," said Head Coach Philip Ponder. "We couldn't get much going offensively and we struggled from the free-throw line, but our defense kept us in the game and we found a way to win. We will need to play better on Sunday against a really good Birmingham Southern squad."
