Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Story by Nyle Farooqui

Men’s soccer ends memorable season with second straight NCAA appearance

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—On Saturday evening, the Oglethorpe men's soccer program's incredible season came to a close after a 2-0 loss to Claremount-Mudd-Scripps in the 2024 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship. The game was played at Colorado College in the Round of 64.

The Stormy Petrels finished their storied season 9-3-6 (3-1-2 SAA) with their second straight appearance on the national stage.

"I'm very proud of what we accomplished even though we came up short today," said head coach Jon Akin in a postgame press conference. "We played a very good team with Claremont today in a very even battle. I think the shot count was 16-15, and we had several flurries in front of the goal that just didn't go our way today. Congrats to Claremont. It's a disappointing end to today but a great season overall."

Things were all even at a scoreless draw midway through the second half when CMS finally broke through. John Laidlaw scored to give Claremount the lead in the 78th minute, and that lead was doubled four minutes later by Liam Hall.

CMS's first goal came shortly after a mad flurry of Oglethorpe chances came up empty. The Petrels had possession deep in the attacking third with a few passes inside the penalty area, ultimately culminating with several close-range shots. The closest attempt ended that threat when CMS cleared the ball off the end-line in what otherwise would have given Oglethorpe the 1-0 lead.

Instead, CMS countered with the eventual game-winning goal less than 60 seconds later.
