Petrels bested by Yeshiva

NEW YORK- The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels wrapped their weekend in New York City with an 88-75 loss to the Yeshiva Maccabees.

Perry Robinson led with 24 points, closely followed by Malachi Dooley with 20. Robinson also made eight rebounds, while Dylan Pumpian and Jackson Kemp posted six each. Kemp also made two steals.

"That was an extremely physical game," said head coach Philip Ponder. "That's one of the bigger, stronger teams we have faced the last few years, but they are skilled as well. Their physicality gave us some issues, but I thought we battled them hard. We actually outrebounded them, but we had some costly turnovers and struggled to stop them consistently."

Dooley nailed a layup to get the game rolling, but the Maccabees responded with two of their own. Yeshiva held the lead for most of the period, but Dooley again tied things up at 29-29 with just four minutes left. Oglethorpe then held the lead for four minutes, but a 3-pointer in the final seconds from Yeshiva put them back on top.

After halftime, Robinson racked up three more points. Oglethorpe was in control for the first part of the period, but Yeshiva soon gained a big enough lead to run away with the rest of the game. Oglethorpe continued scoring until the very end, but Yeshiva won 88-75.

"That team is good enough to win our league," Ponder added. "Despite the loss, I think this game was good for us and will make us better in the long run. Now we're going to enjoy a little bit of New York City before we head home tomorrow."

Game Notes

  • Jordan James made three assists and one steal.
  • This was Oglethorpe and Yeshiva's first ever game.
