MONTGOMERY, Ala.—Keimarya Rivera led with 17 points and 14 rebounds, and five other Stormy Petrels hit the double-digit mark in an 89-66 Oglethorpe win over Huntingdon Saturday in the 2024-25 season opener. Oglethorpe led by a wide margin for much of the second and third quarters before thwarting a late third-quarter rally in the win.
Oglethorpe and Huntingdon were tied at 21-21 at the end of the first quarter before the Petrels used a 9-0 run to open the second quarter and never looked back. Briley Elder capped the run with a 3-pointer near the seven-minute mark of the second quarter, then the Petrels followed that run with an 11-0 run to extend their lead to 20 near the end of the half.
Oglethorpe led by as many as 29 in the third quarter, but a 19-4 run from the Hawks dropped that advantage to 14 by the end of that quarter. To make matters worse, Huntingdon used that third-quarter momentum to cut Oglethorpe's lead to 10 in the first three minutes of the final quarter.
At 72-62 and with Huntingdon rallying with seven minutes left, teams looked to be in line for an exciting finish. However, Oglethorpe finished the game on a 17-4 run that started with a 12-2 stretch midway the period.
