Pumpian rewrites records in Gallaudet win

ATLANTA – Dylan Pumpian led with a career high of 37 points as the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels defeated the Gallaudet Bison 96-77 to keep a clean home record. Several other Petrels hit season highs and career moments in the win.

Pumpian's 11 3-pointers set the new school record, which was previously nine from Josh Burr '06 in 2004. His 37 total points are tied for fourth highest in a single game in the program's NCAA Division III history.

Malachi Dooley followed with 17 points, and Jordan James with 9. Joe Helenbrook made a season high of 10 rebounds while Mason Kemp had three steals.

"That was our best offensive game of the year," said head coach Philip Ponder. "We shot the ball really well tonight, both from 3-point range and from 2-point range, which we needed because our defense wasn't great. Our defense had been ahead of our offense, but it was the exact opposite tonight. I'm still waiting for us to put together a complete game, but it was nice to see the ball go in the basket a lot tonight."

Gallaudet earned their first two points from free throws which were immediately followed by the first of Pumpian's many 3-pointers. The Bison had a decent lead going for half of the first period but Perry Robinson, Pumpian and M. Kemp combined for a 10-0 run which equaled a 31-22 lead. This advantage held for the rest of the game.

Dooley, Willard Thompson and Logan Turner put up a 9-0 run to strengthen that lead even further. The Bison found a small run of their own to end the first half, but the Petrels were still up 50-38.

Gallaudet opened the second half with a 3-pointer that was answered with a layup from Turner. The Bison closed a bit of the scoring in the first 10 minutes, but consistent threes from Pumpian plus scoring from Dooley and Jordan James kept the Petrels on top. Gallaudet ended the game with two layups, but Oglethorpe defeated the Bison 96-77.
