ATLANTA – The Jack Berkshire Classic ended Monday with the Stormy Petrels nabbing an 88-84 win over the Albion Britons in overtime. Perry Robinson and Dylan Pumpian were named to the all-tournament team, with Robinson earning MVP.
Robinson led with 26 points and seven rebounds. Malachi Dooley followed with 18 points, six rebounds and three assists. Additionally, Dylan Pumpian put up 10 points while Joe Helenbrook posted a season high of seven points along with six rebounds. Jackson Kemp made eight rebounds and one assist.
"That was our best win of the year," said head coach Philip Ponder after the win. "Albion is a really good team that would be one of the better teams in our league. I love the resiliency that this team has shown. We were down nine versus Covenant and came back and won. We were down 16 versus Warren Wilson and came back and won. We were down double digits against Earlham and came back and won. We were down 13 today and came back and won. I'd prefer not to be trailing by double digits, but this team has shown some grit in being able to make these type of comebacks. We've had a good nonconference slate, and now it's time to get ready for SAA play."
Albion blindsided the Petrels at the start, gaining a massive lead that seemed impossible to beat. Dooley took the first chip out of that lead. Dooley also found the first tiebreaker late in the first period, but Albion still led 38-36 at halftime.
The Britons charged ahead once again in the second half, and Oglethorpe struggled to catch back up. With just 28 seconds left, a 3-pointer from Pumpian tied the game 77-77. Albion made a basket and left four 3.8 seconds on the clock, then despite immense pressure, Robinson made one more layup at the buzzer.
The game headed into overtime at 79-79. The Britons hit a 3-pointer right out of the gate, but Robinson and Dooley combined for the lead that would ride out the rest of overtime.Â
