Barnes crushes late homer as Petrels bounce back

ATLANTA—The Oglethorpe baseball team put on another display of resiliency Friday night in earning a doubleheader split with visiting Fontbonne. After dropping the opener 16-7, the Stormy Petrels used the momentum left over from a late rally to open game two with a three-run first and win 10-4 behind strong pitching and a late homer from Blair Barnes.

Game two was all tied at 4-4 midway through the seventh before Jonathan Cruz singled to lead off the bottom half, then took second on a stolen base. Two batters later, Cruz was on third with two out and Fontbonne just two strikes away from being out of the jam until Barnes smoked his second career home run into the parking lot of neighboring Dorough Field House. It was a no-doubter.

Ahead then 6-4, relief pitcher Dylan Quintilio answered Barnes' go-ahead dinger by striking out the side on 14 pitches in the top of the eighth, then faced only one over the minimum on a walk in the ninth.

Between those two frames, Oglethorpe put up a four-spot in the bottom of the eight to put the game out of reach. Hunter Spence came home on an error but the bulk of the damage that inning came off Sam Mills' two-out, bases-loaded triple down the right-field line.

Mills posted eight RBI's on the day as he also hit a three-run homer to left-center field in the ninth inning of game one.
