ATLANTA – The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels defeated the Millsaps Majors 91-81 to advance to the Southern Athletic Association semifinals. Perry Robinson led with 29 points as six others breached the scoring column.
The Stormy Petrels weathered a late storm in a game that was tied 61-61 with eight minutes to go. They responded to the tie game with a 20-10 game-finishing run, including an 8-0 run over the next two and a half minutes.
Robinson also led in rebounds along with Jordan James and Uba Ezigbo who all recorded eight. Mason Kemp followed in points, totaling 13, as James and Malachi Dooley each had 12. Uba Ezigbo scored 11 points while Dylan Pumpian had nine, all from 3-pointers. Dooley made a career high of nine assists, Ezigbo made three steals, and Jackson Kemp had six rebounds.Â
"That was a great win for us," said Head Coach Philip Ponder. "We had really struggled to score against them the first two times we played them, but we got it rolling on offense today. We didn't play as well as I would have liked defensively, but we played hard. I loved our intensity for all 40 minutes. We are looking forward to playing Rhodes in the semifinals next Saturday."
Pumpian quickly sank a 3-pointer to kick off the first round of the SAA tournament, and Millsaps struggled to respond as Robinson sank a layup. Less than two minutes into the game, Oglethorpe amassed an 8-2 lead after Ezigbo drained a 3-pointer. The Majors began to catch up in the later portion of the period, but Oglethorpe headed into halftime up 38-33.Â
James opened the second half with a jumper, but the Majors were still closing in. Millsaps kept the score difference within a five-point range for most of the period and came close to reaching a tie several times. The only tie came later in the game, when the Majors made a 3-pointer that put the game at 61-61. After Oglethorpe's 8-0 run, the final minutes of the game went back and forth shooting free-throws, until Perry Robinson slammed a dunk in the final minute to give Oglethorpe the 91-81 win.
