Bounce-back win for Petrels over Roanoke

ATLANTA—Zach Turner, Paul Gaeta and Hunter Spence combined for 15 strikeouts and a three-hit gem where the Oglethorpe baseball team took an early lead and never looked back in a 7-3 victory over Roanoke Saturday afternoon at Hermance Stadium. The Stormy Petrels moved to 4-3 on the year.

Turner made the start and struck out five in three and two-third innings. Gaeta entered in the fourth in a jam but used one of his seventh punchouts to leave the inning still in a 4-3 lead. He then continued through partway into the eighth allowing only one hit before handing things over to Spence who struck out three in a perfect effort across two innings.

Oglethorpe scored all the runs it would need in the first two innings. With two out and the bases clear in the first, Jonathan Cruz started a rally with a double then came home to score on a Cooper Krause triple that nearly went out of the park for a two-run homer. A batter later, Sam Mills singled through the left side to score Krause for a 2-0 lead.

Brick Conway started off the second inning with a double and three batters later scored on a sacrifice fly from Trey Kinnan. Shortly after that, Jaxson Corr singled down the third-base line to bring home Mason Pearcy.

Oglethorpe added to its lead in the sixth when Conway singled home Krause to make it 6-3. Pearcy rounded out the scoring with an RBI ground ball one batter later.

Game Notes

  • Turner did not factor into the decision only making it to the fourth but had a solid line of only two hits, three runs, three walks and five K's.
  • Geata picked up the win with a line of 3.1 innings, one hit, no runs, two walks and seven K's. He moved to 2-0 with his third scoreless outing in three appearances this season.
  • Spence earned the save, his first, with a line of 2.0 innings, no hits, no runs, no walks and three K's. He faced only six and retired them all.
  • The trio's combined 15 strikeouts were one shy of the Oglethorpe record for strikeouts in a nine-inning game. The team's all-time strikeouts record is also the NCAA Division III record of 27 strikeouts set in 21 innings on April 22, 2011.
  • Seven Petrels earned a hit at the plate, including Krause and Conway who were both 2-for-4.
  • Oglethorpe moved to 1-1 for the weekend after falling to Transylvania in the first game of the tournament Friday night.
  • Shane Newsome went 2-for-4 to lead Oglethorpe at the plate in Friday's game.
