AVE MARIA, Fla. - The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels opened their spring break trip with a 16-11 loss to the Ave Maria Gyrenes.
Ally Moir led with four goals and one assist, followed by Amanda Cason with three goals and two assists. Goalkeeper Tori Perez made 15 saves.
Kaitlynn Alford quickly scored the first goal of the game, but Ave Maria was also quick with a response. The Gyrenes went on to gain a 6-2 lead in the first quarter, but the Petrels remained resilient as Moir made the first goal of the second period. Oglethorpe came close to evening the score but headed into halftime down 8-6.
Cason and Moir made Oglethorpe's two goals in the third quarter, but the Gyrenes were able to pad their lead even further. Ave Maria ran away with the fourth quarter, handing the Petrels a 16-11 loss as a sour start to spring break.

- This was the first ever matchup between the Petrels and the Gyrenes.
- Savannah Freeman recorded a season high of three groundballs.
- Ave Maria's lacrosse program is also fairly young, beginning in 2015.
- Gyrene refers to World War I and II veterans, specifically Marines in the Pacific theater.
- This is only the second time the Petrels have played in Florida, with the first being at Palm Beach Atlantic University in 2019.
