Petrels drop rubber game at Centre in extras

DANVILLE, Ky.—Nick Tarantino drove in the go-ahead run in the ninth inning, but the Oglethorpe baseball team suffered a 7-6 defeat to Centre when the Colonels tied the game in the ninth and won it in extra innings to secure the series Sunday in a Southern Athletic Association game. It was the second straight rubber game Oglethorpe lost in as many weeks.

Centre won the series in come-from-behind fashion. After Oglethorpe won the opener Saturday, 6-5, Centre took game two 6-3 and game three 7-6.

Oglethorpe battled back from a 5-3 deficit in the eighth inning. Isaiah Pou, who had a big home run in Saturday's win, singled home Drew Jabaley in the eighth inning to start a two-run rally that saw the Stormy Petrels tie the game. Jaxson Corr followed in the next at-bat with his third hit of the day to left field, driving in Trey Kinnan to tie the game.

Oglethorpe then went into the lead in the ninth when Tarantino singled in Brick Conway with two out. All then looked good for Oglethorpe to win its second SAA series of the season, but Centre put together a rally of its own in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game on a bunt with one out.

Centre followed three innings later with a walk-off two-out homer.

Game Notes

  • Corr led the Petrels with a 3-for-5 effort at the plate.
  • Tarantino (2-for-4) and Greg Johnson (2-for-3) followed in the multihit category.
  • This marked Oglethorpe's second walk-off loss of the season.
