ATLANTA—Will Marconi pitched five strong innings allowing only one run against No. 4 Birmingham Southern on Friday, but the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels gave up a five-run sixth on the way to a 6-2 loss in the opening game of a Southern Athletic Association three-game series.
It was Oglethorpe's SAA opener for the season, and the Petrels were looking to bounce back from a four-game losing streak, but instead they left 11 stranded in moving to 5-8 (0-1 SAA) on the year.
Marconi showed some nerves in the first inning as he allowed one across and had himself in a bases-loaded jam with two out. But after a ground ball ended the inning, he settled in to pitch the next four frames scoreless. He struck out one looking to end the second inning with two on, he pitched around a one-out single in the third, then he retired his last eight over the remainder of the third through the fifth.
Upon Marconi's exit to start the sixth, the fourth-ranked Panthers came to life with five runs on two hits to go ahead 6-0.
Oglethorpe made several great attempts at cutting back into the lead but came up short. In the next half inning, Jonathan Cruz helped answer the five-run sixth with an RBI single to center field, scoring Jaxson Corr, and Mason Pearcy followed a batter later with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-2.
One inning later, Corr and Brick Conway hit back-to-back singles with one out to get another rally attempt started, but a flyout and groundout ended the threat. Matt Huckabee and Carter Guarino then reached in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, but proved to be Oglethorpe's last two base runners.
Game Notes
- Marconi suffered the loss but had a solid line of five innings, four hits, one run, three walks and three strikeouts.

- Guarino, Corr and Conway all went 2-for-5 to lead Oglethorpe at the plate. Huckabee came in to pinch hit in the sixth and went 1-for-2.
