Rubber game goes extras, but Petrels end season

CONWAY, Ark.—It all looked like the Oglethorpe baseball team would advance to the final site of the Southern Athletic Association tournament, but a two-run ninth by Hendrix followed by a walk-off hit in the 10th saw the Stormy Petrels eliminated in the quarterfinal three-game series to the Warriors Friday afternoon at University of Central Arkansas.

Oglethorpe had split Thursday's doubleheader with a 14-7 win in game one followed by a 7-2 loss in game two to set the stage for the exciting finale, which Hendrix won 7-6.

Hendrix scored first in the deciding game, but a five-run fourth from Oglethorpe swung the lead into the Petrels' favor. The score remained 5-2 through seven, but the Warriors put together five runs across the last three frames, including runs in each one, to come away victorious.

Oglethorpe's fourth-inning scoring started with an RBI single from Brick Conway, and Isaiah Pou and Jaxson Corr followed with RBI singles of their own to give Oglethorpe the nice cushion. Hendrix chipped back into it with one in the fourth, two in the eighth, two in the ninth and one in the 10th.

Game Notes

  • Dylan Quintilio pitched another great game, turning in another quality start. He went six innings only allowing two runs on eight hits and no walks. He struck out four.
  • Quintilio's last batter faced came up in a big situation with the bases loaded in the sixth inning of a 5-2 ballgame. He managed his fourth strikeout looking to end that threat.
  • Nick Tarantino led the Petrels at the plate going 3-for-4 with a run. Mason Pearcy, Pou and Corr all had two hits. Sam Mills scored two runs.
  • Pearcy had an RBI in the ninth inning that gave Oglethorpe an insurance run with two out.
