MURFREESBORO, Tenn.—In a rematch of a close 6-3 loss during the regular season, the Oglethorpe men's tennis team fell again to Rhodes 5-2 to end the 2024 campaign Friday in the quarterfinals of the Southern Athletic Association tournament. The tournament was originally scheduled to take place at Old Fort Park, but rain forced action to be moved indoors to Adams Tennis Center.
Oglethorpe's previous meeting saw three Rhodes points decided in tiebreaks, meaning the Stormy Petrels needed only to flip two of those results to come away with the quarterfinal win. The first of those happened on singles court four when Jefferson Page turned in a 7-5, 6-4 win. The score was 4-1 at that point and Page's match made it 4-2 with the three remaining courts active.
Daniel Cohen, at that point, had bounced back to win the second set and was tied 4-4 in the third, Figge Pernfors led on court five after taking the first set 6-3, and Zack Raymond, who had defeated Rhodes' Gabe Williams in straight sets during the regular season, was midway through his first set. It indeed looked like the Petrels could pull out each of the last three matches and advance to the semis, but Rhodes's Daniel Trudell took the next two games at No. 1 singles to clinch the victory.
Oglethorpe's other point of the day came from No. 3 doubles as Page/Raymond combined for an 8-2 win, repeating their 8-4 win from the regular season.
With the loss, Oglethorpe finished the regular season with an 8-9 record. Cohen and Bailey Raymond highlighted the end of the year with recognition on the All-SAA second team.
